Microsoft releasing Windows 8.1, a year in making

Microsoft releasing Windows 8.1, a year in making | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

Microsoft is releasing its long-awaited Windows 8.1 upgrade as a free download starting Thursday. It addresses some of the gripes people have had with Windows 8, the dramatically different operating system that attempts to bridge the divide between tablets and PCs.

Windows 8.1 still features the dual worlds that Windows 8 created when it came out last October. On one hand, it features a touch-enabled tile interface resembling what's found in tablet computers. On the other, there's the old desktop mode where the keyboard and mouse still reign. The update adds some new finger - and gesture-friendly shortcuts for touch-based apps, while restoring some resepct for the desktop mode that a billion PC users have become accustomed to.

The release comes as sales of traditional desktop and laptop computers continue to decline because consumers are spending money instead on the latest smartphones and tablets. It also comes at a time of transition for Microsoft as the Redmond, Wash., company focuses on devices and services, not just software. Earlier this month, Microsoft struck a deal to acquire Nokia's phone business and patent rights for more than $7 billion. Microsoft is also searching for a new CEO to replace Steven A. Ballmer, who announced last month that he plans to retire within the next year.

The Window 8.1 update is free for current owners of Windows 8. It's available starting at 7 a.m. Thursday in New York, which corresponds to the start of Friday in New Zealand. Simply go to the Windows Store app to find it. It may take a few hours for updates to reach everyone. Computers with Windows 8.1 already installed will go on sale Friday local time. That's also when people will be able to buy stand-alone copies of Windows 8.1.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Ready for Windows 8.1? This is free for current Windows 8 owners. All those bumps and glitches have been sorted out and now with it's new touch-enabled interface...how could you not want to give it a try.

iPhone app to help improve eyesight - DAWN.COM

iPhone app to help improve eyesight - DAWN.COM | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

The eye lens companies are designing a host of solutions to aid glasses wearers, including futuristic lenses and even an iPhone app that developers say can help people wean themselves off glasses says a news report.

In an exclusive report the Los Angeles Times said on Saturday one area of focus has been on reducing eyestrain for people who spend several hours a day staring at computers, tablets and smartphones. Many optometrists believe the light emitted from such devices could damage a viewer’s eyesight over time, although that hasn’t been conclusively proven.

Still, lens companies are rolling out a slew of new lenses that they say will help ward off those potentially harmful effects.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

One of the greatest things, I've come across today. A possible phone app that could repair eyesite. Even over time, it could mean that if you wear glasses, this app could wean you off of them.

Photoshop Tutorials just in time for Halloween, InDesign and when Big Data and Graphic Arts Collide

Photoshop Tutorials just in time for Halloween, InDesign and when Big Data and Graphic Arts Collide | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

Just in time for Halloween, who doesn't want to spend a little time on Photoshop to create a gruesome or playfully cute , creepy piece of art? Here you will find a batch of ideas from the haunted house, spooky text to the legendary two face from the Batman comics. Some tutorials may be a bit more of challenge but it'll give you more of a grasp about parts of Photoshop, you may not have known about before. Remember to have fun, creating those spectacular graphic effects!

Switching software, usually means that learning curve and if we can avoid it, we will. Do you have a publication that is a multi-page or possibly a writer? I had to try this out since from time to time, I tend to lend a hand with a few music publications. And trust me, if you are on the go and do not have the time to re-edit a layout and pray that you don't mess up the data. By changing a few lines...this is a tool that you should switch to.

In conjunction with graphic art design, a new computer program has been developed to let graphic artists use a 'RealBrush.' Big Data has helped make RealBrush a reality, using algorithms. Making online painting, more vibrant and collectively realistic, instead of choppy. This program is one of a kind, at some point you can use the samples as a baseline to create your own sort of brush stroke and designs.

The Week’s Best Android, iPhone, iPad and Windows Phone Apps

The Week’s Best Android, iPhone, iPad and Windows Phone Apps | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

If you have a happy trigger finger, and like looking over past memories, Memoir is for you. It’s an app that collects all your photos, tags places travelled, and steals your social media posts to provide you with easy access to all of them. Memoir can dig out photos of you and friends instantly if you request them, and can show you what you were doing at this moment a year ago, for nostalgic effect. However, if you want to forget something (trust me, we all do) then the app makes it easy to edit and remove “memories” too.

DogVacay: Best. Invention. Ever. Who likes sticking their dog in a kennel while they jet off to a romantic break/sun holiday/chinchilla ranch? Nobody, that’s who. Poor Fido stuck in a cage, freakin’ out because he’s a chihuahua with a rottweiler as a neighbour. Well hey, here’s an alternative: DogVacay is like an AirBnB for pets. Book a dog-sitting stay through a fairly straightforward process in-app, cough up the agreed amount, et voila. Fido gets cuddles from a stranger instead of PTS.

Hamlet: Explore Shakespeare: Cambridge University Press has been releasing a series of Shakespeare plays as iPad apps in the last while; the latest of which is Hamlet (one of my favourites). You basically get the full text, an audio “performance” and photos of the more well-known productions of the piece, with a huge amount of interactive features all aimed to give you a better understanding the play. Especially good if it’s on a secondary/uni syllabus.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

This is a round up of the best and coolest ipad, iphone, android and windows apps that are inventive and fun to play with. A favorite so far is the 'memoir' app. Tagging your photos to where you were, reliving memories that seem to stay with you. Another app that has to be more a helper than any other would be Linqapp, which promises assistance from native speakers, if you are abroad and need help with the language, this is free and instant.

Wearable Apps, Premiere of Elements 12 and bringing narration to Photo Sharing

Wearable Apps, Premiere of Elements 12 and bringing narration to Photo Sharing | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

Yes, you read that right the wearable app. It would be the wrist watch you wear to work or just for enjoyment. But there could be a few apps that could be adaptable to your on the go, lifestyle. And like others, I thought the main debate would be over how fashionable it would be...but that's not the case...it's more about how and what will they be able to do? Right now the platforms from which they have their minds set on is the Smartwatch and Google's headset. The watches have arrived though, will they be only able to handle like fitness regimen apps or could they go further and beyond?

Photoshop premiere's Element 12, big, big news! I love how this one was dedicated to all the users that do not use the Creative Cloud, bringing in a punch of cool new effects. From moving around objects within a photo to the Elements Mobile Album, for sharing photos from mobile to mobile. So instead of your photos being saved to your computer and all you want to do is share them instantly with someone, you can now forward them by your phone. Even though the price range has sadly stayed that ridiculous cost, I wouldn't mind either testing this out or saving up.

Photo sharing by narration? Don't we do this already at parties and get togethers...not quite like this. Shadow Puppets is this virtual story book, but for your photography. I for one, like hearing about the stories behind the image. Whether this is mainly a family bonding experience or you have a few friends interested in that trip to Greece you took. Here's the app to do all of that for you. And pretty handy, I might have to share some of my own before the day is up.

Google+ Moodsnap and the never-ending possibilities with 3D

Google+ Moodsnap and the never-ending possibilities with 3D | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

Google plus has been deemed one of the best. And for good reason, I might add. Without having to sign up or a pay a ridiculous amount, Google+ has the brilliance of a highend Photoshop. If you are not the manual type, say using white balance or histograms. The Auto Enhance feature some how, perfectly grasps ahold of the right amount of color, shadow and depth that the image needs to achieve an extra foot of intensity. Also to add another note, you do not have to worry about loosing your original image, with the copied one you want to use, if later on your change or mind...that first format is still intact and not lost forever in the internet sphere.

This app has to be a favorite already, and I haven't even installed it...yet. Moodsnap, which focuses on images that provoke our emotions (are you feeling enlightened or pulled down). Whichever image you choose, it will select a playlist that fits that particular mood. Of course once you've favorited or banned the one's you wish to hear over and over or never again. The app collectively knows what you would want to hear by that image, you've selected. To me that is simple enough to brighten up any dark day.

Adobe has been going 3D crazy. With that said, the new illustator app that creates an interaction between human movement and electronic visuals. So think back to real player or windows media player, when you clicked on visuals to the song you were listening to...remember? Just this allows users to decide how lines, points, letters, grids, or whatever visual they choose interact with certain types of motion. Crazy, huh?

Then Photoshop CS6 goes and introduces the beginnings of the next step, exciting features to help make-up 3D objects. The virtual world just became a bit more real.

Adobe passes one million Creative Cloud subscribers, debuts Photoshop Photography Program

Adobe passes one million Creative Cloud subscribers, debuts Photoshop Photography Program | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

Adobe announced today that its Creative Cloud software suite surpassed the one million subscriber mark in Q3 2013. That announcement was followed up by the release of the Photoshop Photography Program, which includes Photoshop CC and LIghtroom 5 for only $9.99 a month as a limited-time offer.

The special pricing on this program can only be claimed before December 31st, however, so users who want to get in on the deal should do so before the end of the year.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

This is huge! We already had some idea as to how big this offer would be. With 20 GB of online storage, Behance Prosite (where you can show of your designs) and and access to Creative Cloud Learn's training resources. But for a lot of us, to acquire these things we would have to save up immensely. Thankfully Adobe had the 9-5 people in mind.

Digital Bolex Sample Footage Shows Off the Power of RAW Video in Low Light

Digital Bolex Sample Footage Shows Off the Power of RAW Video in Low Light | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

Althought we don't typically spend much time on high end video equipment, the most recent demo video shot with the D16 is a great example of just how much shadow and detail you can pull of RAW footage.

D16's 16mm sensor maxes out at ISO 400. It's not a camera meant for low light shooting at all, and yet you can see how well the footage turned out in spite of that. The video was shot a max ISO (of course) with a vintage 25mm lens and transcoded in ClipHouse. Every bit then had to be pushed heavily in post to bring out enough light, but even in the shadows, the noise is often noticeable if it's there at all.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Even when a camera like D16 isn't meant to capture low light video...so well. It's wonderful to know, now that RAW can be pushed far enough in post production to produce such a beautifully shot video. For us beginners in short films, that type of lighting gives us goosebumps. Because all in all, it's about the mood that presents itself on video than everything else that is going on.

TechCrunch is a leading technology media property, dedicated to obsessively profiling startups, reviewing new Internet products, and breaking tech news.

Google+ users are wondering what has happened to the service’s Photo Editor, which has been down for days. Specifically, users had previously been able to access an “Edit” button on their photos shared on Google+’s site, in order to perform editing functions like cropping, adding effects, text, or decorations to photos, and more.

This button used to appear next to the “Share” option in Google+ Photos, which remains today. Also still available are the more advanced “Auto Enhance” and “Highlight” functions under the “More” menu at the top of the photo’s page. In addition, users can rotate, zoom and delete photos via the buttons on the menu."

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Has your google photo editor been down? This may explain why.

Yahoo Image Search Update, Adobe Photoshop Touch Review and a few Retouching Tips

Yahoo Image Search Update, Adobe Photoshop Touch Review and a few Retouching Tips | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

Yahoo now follows their Creative Commons grounds idea, by filtering out the images only under the CC law. Along with the name of the author, title and quality of the image, there will be no more need of endless searching on Flickr. Between sharing photos on different media outlets and knowing actully whether or not you could use the photo. We have a better understanding now with this Image Search update. My favorite part, honestly is the menu. It spreads out like a visual spreadsheet before you, already giving you a thumbnail view of what you want to see.

The Adobe Photoshop Touch 2013, had a review that made it an easily inbetween complicated and easy going tool. Besides your have to look around a bit at the compiled mobile controls (which in this case you'll have to search for). Ultimately it was the case that even the older devices would have this Photoshop run smoothly. Supporting up to 12 megapixels and the layers depends on the image size (which could be a down side) but newcomers will have the most trouble. Don't worry after a bit you will memorize where the controls are. The upside, this program has no problem working well with others.

Retouching up portraits seems to be the thing this week. No one wants to come out looking completely unlike their original image. But it doesn't hurt to maybe lighten it a bit or cover that blimish, we don't necessarily want to show. Between dirt, scratches or spots that are visible, zooming in will make these spots more clearer, to where you will be able to remove them. Ideally photo masking is the best bet for anyone and maybe everyone.

Adobe has disclosed that there has been a breach in their servers, and hackers had access to encrypted data for as many as 2.9 million customers. Adobe is stressing that the data is encrypted and that they "do not believe the attackers removed decrypted credit or debit car numbers."

Whoa, that has a relying friendship with Adobe...you might want to step back for a bit. But it's not shocking with all of the new advancements on Photoshop that someone would hack, such a giant milestone.

Houzz Has Your Image Rights, How Long Before They’re Selling Them?

Houzz Has Your Image Rights, How Long Before They’re Selling Them? | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

It may already be too late. Houzz appears to be using the images posted by professional photographers to illustrate editorial stories they create for the front of the site.

One photographer was contacted by a staff writer to find out who built what was depicted in the images with no mention of licensing the images for this reuse.

It’s not unusual for social media sites to have onerous terms when it comes to posting your images on their site. Generally this is because they have to host the images on servers which may be located anywhere in the world and repost the images at will for other people to see. To solve this they take all your rights… We’re all suspicious of what might come next but so far that’s been the extent of what they do. Houzz has taken the first step in reuse that should be of great concern for professional photographers. Paying writers to create editorial content with images uploaded to the site competes directly with existing editorial outlets that pay for a similar use. So not only are they ripping off photographers they’re stealing readers from outlets with their free content. And as Houzz works towards a profitable business model they will start selling advertising against their freely obtained content… and their evil plan will be complete.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

No matter what media giant you tend to load your photos too, they may have that problem where they use your photos. Houzz has now joined the ever growing list of sites to be concerned about.

Google+ has improved RAW to JPEG conversions for 70 plus camera models.

Camera models that will benefit include models from Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic and Sony. Google has mentioned that other models will be added to the supported list in the future.

Current supported cameras are:

To see the difference for yourself, take a look at the Google+ website. While you're there, why not take a look at ePHOTOzine's Google+ page, too?

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Thanks to Google+ is now converting RAW to JPEG. Making images sharper and it will be able to bring out the color hue more. And more than likely you have a camera model that will be able to adapt to this conversion.

What, Exactly, Will Wearable Apps Do? | MIT Technology Review

What, Exactly, Will Wearable Apps Do? | MIT Technology Review | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

The age of wearable computing is upon us. Forget the debate over how capable or fashionable the first devices are, how popular they may eventually become, or even whether we fully understand what we’re getting into with these devices (see “The Paradox of Wearable Technology”). The big question is simply: what will they do? And the answer will have much to do with the apps that emerge.

Both hardware makers and software developers hope that wearables, like the smartphone, tablet, and television, will become a new platform for application development. The two most promising platforms are the headset and the smart watch. But while the only viable headset is Google’s still-in-beta Glass, smart watches and smart watch apps have arrived. These early smart watches may also help clarify what does and doesn’t work for software development in the broader emerging category of wearable technology.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

From calculater watches to now the wearable app? Scientists are making it to were now this is a possibility. Instead of everyone asking how fashionable will it be, they are asking well since they are so compact what will they be able to do? This smart watch, for starters has a popular fitness application, so this is cleraly understandable when it comes to work-outs and joggers.

Online Branding Tips | 5 Highly-Effective Ways to Maximize Your... | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

Online Branding Tips | It is no secret that in this day and age, online presence = brand awareness. In fact, most marketing experts agree that how your brand online is the 21st century equivalent of your first meeting with a customer. Your online brand is what people think of you when you are not available. In fact, your online brand is as important as any of the traditional forms of branding and becoming more important each day. Most customers today are technologically savvy and typically rely on a company’s online presence as a validity test of its credibility in the market.

Branding is much more than just a name and a logo. It’s a philosophy, a particular way of doing things that starts with the simple act of presenting yourself, or your business, but ends with an increase in perceived valued; which ultimately leads to an increase in profit.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

A lot of individuals do not know about branding. Staying on top of your business and branding is also how people will recognize you. Like how Twitter has the small blue bird icon. You'll need something that represents you but stands out.

Everyone loves high quality icons. Even user interface designers, who work with sketches and wireframes.

The problem is that popular prototyping tools produce mockups that don't look so great. That's why we've created over three hundred design elements specifically for prototyping. A hand-crafted set of icons for mockups. 300 (maybe even more) little bits and pieces and bells and whistles. You can assemble anything from them. From the mobile YouTube UI to a model WWII tank.
We've double checked to make sure you're covered. Current version is incompatible with assembling several abyssal fish spieces and Higgs boson.

New iPhone 5S Coming: What to Expect At Tomorrow's Apple Event

New iPhone 5S Coming: What to Expect At Tomorrow's Apple Event | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

At its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., Apple will hold an event on Tuesday that it says will "brighten everyone's day." Beyond that Apple hasn't said much about its next phones, but thanks to rumors, leaks and heavy speculation, we have a pretty good handle on what is coming at the gathering, which begins at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET.

Think of the iPhone 5S like the iPhone 4S -- an update to the current iPhone with some new tricks. According to the leaks, the iPhone 5S will look like the 5, though it might come in a new gold hue. It is expected to have one big difference though on its home button: a fingerprint reader.

According to leaks and some leaked software code in iOS 7, the fingerprint sensor will allow you to log into the phone with just a swipe of your finger. Other improvements are said to include a faster processor and a better camera. So if you are holding out for an iPhone with a bigger screen than the current 4-inch display, it looks like you are going to have to wait a bit longer.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Don't go out and buy a new iphone just yet. There are two coming out tomorrow, iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. The latter is a lower-cost version.

Acer Iconia A3

Acer Iconia A3 | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it
Acer is carrying the torch for larger slates with its new Iconia A3.

Revealed just ahead of the IFA tech trade show in Berlin, this 10-inch device goes head-to-head with the larger iPad and Google's Nexus 10, though has a 1,280x800 pixel display, which isn't as many pixels as you'd find in some of its rival devices.

That's certainly a downside, but with any luck that screen looks clear and colourful enough that we forget its pixel-density shortcomings. Inside you get a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, so hopefully we won't have to worry about sluggish performance, and graphically demanding games can remain on the menu."

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Going head to head with iPad and Google, Acer has stepped up to the plate. With an affordable tablet that has basically only one downside, a low pixel count but the screen still comes out colorful and clear.
