Photoshop Tutorial – Wet Ink Typography | BestDesignTuts

Photoshop Tutorial – Wet Ink Typography | BestDesignTuts | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

A cool-looking typographic font designed for a smeared look with water gives a cool quotient to art. Photoshop helps us attain this font easily with the help of its tools. We can find these fonts in printed form and can be achieved with a smearing effect. The fonts are so well smeared that they look elegant in spite of being smudged together. These fonts can be used for t-shirt prints as it gives cool effect. The effect is actually created in Photoshop, but gives it such a real effect, as if ink and water are mixed together by mistake.

We all know that water and ink do not mix. Then what is the way to create such effect?

Kitty Fisher's insight:

A wet ink typography is a pretty cool canvas...to think about. It reminds me of paint splatters but in black and white, with neutral greys.

Adding Texture and Transparency to 3D Objects in Photoshop CS6 Extended – Design & Illustration – Tuts+

Adding Texture and Transparency to 3D Objects in Photoshop CS6 Extended – Design & Illustration – Tuts+ | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

In the last episode of this series we showed you how to create several 3D objects in Photoshop. In this tutorial, we will show you how to add texture to those objects to create a realistic 3D wine glass, bottle, and table top; each with a varying degree of transparency, refraction, and reflection.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

This is a great tutorial for adding that realistic, last touch to your 3D objects in Photoshop. For instance in the photo above, you want to have the shadow appear behind the wine bottle. And the slight shadow of the wine glass, reflected on the bottle itself.

How to Quickly Deal With Dark Eye Sockets In Photoshop @ Weeder

How to Quickly Deal With Dark Eye Sockets In Photoshop @ Weeder | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

Have you ever had to do a shoot in a room where the lights are all over head, and they are causing nasty shadows? Let me let you in on a little secret, you do it all of the time and you just don’t know it. That’s right when you shoot outside, the sun is the overhead light source. You might be saying but I shoot my clients in the shade, so the sun really isn’t a factor. Well I am here to tell you that even when you shoot in open shade (shade where the open sky is above your subject’s head), you are still dealing with the problems caused by an overhead light source… This problem is shadows, and in particular shadows in the eye sockets, that just look terrible.

Lets face it, sometimes you just can’t use flash or a reflector to open up the shadows. Sometimes you can’t direct your subjects to face this way or that. Sometimes you just have to shoot and get what you can and fix it in post. Yeah, I said it…”Fix It In Post”. Not every image is meant for the cover of Vogue, or destined to be a master print. Lets face it, social networking displays billions of images a year that are just terrible. Have you ever been given a job where the client says, ” I am hiring you to do a shoot for Facebook”? Well I have, they didn’t say it exactly like that, but they did say I need you to cover this event and give me the files for social networking and a press/media kit. These types of images don’t have a really high artistic value. What matters most, is that these images help to support the clients story, event, or news.

I have to say, as a photographer, these types of images aren’t so much fun to make, but they do pay the bills. I really want to use all of my professional tools to deliver the best work I can, but as I said earlier, some images just aren’t ever going to be art, but they are still very valuable, none the less. When you are forced to make images with one hand tied behind your back (no flash or light making aids), it’s important for you to deliver images that are better than everyone else that happens to be covering the same event. This is where today’s tutorial comes in to play. If learn this simple technique, you can quickly fix those dark eye sockets, shadows caused by bangs, or any other unwanted shadows in a matter of just a few seconds.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

That quick touch up can make a world of difference. When you get that over-head lighting, that might be a bit unexpected (if those bulbs are too bright) it can make anyone look like they have long shadows on their faces. So no one is safe from that type of lighting. This quick fix on Photoshop can save you from using up youe SD card to find the perfect lighting.

Create a colorful explosion retro inspired design | I Love Photoshop | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

This tutorial will teach you how to create a design featuring a colorful explosion contrasting with grayscale elements. This design heavily relies on the creative use of brushes, patterns and Photoshop tools/effects.

Though this tutorial was created in Photoshop CS5, you should have no problems achieving the same effect in any CS version.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Retro is a colorful expression that will never fail to be present. Between the pin-up, 1950's, retro look you'll want to leave a bit of black and white as well as glam, mixed together and spread apart...to give out the appeal you are looking for. It's easy to get over zealous with colors...but knowing when to tone it down and make it, stand on it's own...now that's great photoshop.

How to Sharpen Image Edges in Photoshop - Digital Photography School

How to Sharpen Image Edges in Photoshop - Digital Photography School | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

If you’re a Lightroom user you’ll know that in Lightroom you can mask the sharpening you apply to an image so it is applied to the edges in the image only. This same feature is not yet available in Photoshop and the sharpening filters there are applied to the entire image rather than just edge detail.

However you can achieve a reasonable approximation of the Lightroom masking feature in Photoshop using the Photoshop Find Edges filter. The benefit of this is you can apply more sharpening to the image than you would do without the masking effect and areas of flat color like skies and skin tones won’t be sharpened. Here’s how to do this.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Using Photoshop to sharpen your image edges now has a walk through tutorial. Make those edges standout as much as the center focus.

Clean Up Your Photoshop Swatches and Styles | Viget

Clean Up Your Photoshop Swatches and Styles | Viget | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

I can't stand how Photoshop loads your Swatch and Styles palettes with a whole pile of useless defaults. They gunk up a feature that should, by its very nature, be as pared down as possible. I try to keep custom palettes for the sites I'm designing because it makes my work faster and more consistent. If you're always grabbing the eye-dropper to get colors and copying/pasting layer styles, chances are you're wasting time and getting innaccurate results to boot. So what's a good Photoshopper to do?

You could select each color and style individually and delete them, like I used to do. But there's a faster solution that is so easy, you'll kick yourself. I've created two empty palettes for you. Just download them and follow the directions below.

To empty your Swatches palette: Open the Swatch palette, select the More Options dropdown in the upper right, and select Replace Swatches. It'll prompt you to browse for the new palette. Choose empty_swatches.aco. It replaces the default rainbow of colors with a single swatch of black.

To empty your Styles palette: Open the Styles palette, select the More Options dropdown in the upper right, and select Replace Swatches. It'll prompt you to browse for the new palette. Choose empty_styles.asl. It replaces the default monstrosities with a simple "no styles" style.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Need to clean up your swatches palette? I know I need to go through and pick out what you do want and know what you would use, and get rid of the useless ones that honestly will not benefit you.

Adobe Photoshop Touch 2013 review - Review

Adobe Photoshop Touch 2013 review - Review | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

Photoshop Touch is a full-service photo editing app. It's available on the iPhone, iPad, and legions of Android smartphones and tablets, and is really most appropriate when you need to do heavy lifting on one of those devices – though it's no competitor for the real thing. It's perhaps more appropriate for roughing out ideas, comps and adjustments when you're out and about or kicking back in front of the TV.

There are differences between the tablet version (£6.99/US$10) and the smartphone version (£2.99/$5), but they boil down mostly to screen real estate.

All mobile controls are present on the phone version, but you may have to poke around to find them. The interface and performance on my iPhone 5 and my Samsung Galaxy Nexus were identical—and impressive. In fact, apart from opening or saving large files, there is very little wait or lag time on any of the devices I worked on, including second- and third-generation iPads. I didn't experience a single crash.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

This review goes back to the 'kick back in front of the TV,' sort of Adobe Photoshop. It almost feels as if this photo-editing has the mix of complex and yet easy adjustments that you could do with your eyes closed. What I thought was a highlight, was the fact that even with a second and third generation iPad, the system did not crash. That to me has rewarding results, in itself.

Cloudy with a chance of Photoshop - Tech News | The Star Online

Cloudy with a chance of Photoshop - Tech News | The Star Online | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

Adobe’s photo-editor software gets its annual refresh with tweaks and new features, but its biggest change is the move to a subscription model. Adobe has tweaked and added more features to Photoshop Creative Cloud (Photoshop CC), making an already good image-editing application even better.

However, what Photoshop CC adds is a number of new tools, most notably a Camera Shake Reduction filter (accessible from Filter\Sharpen\Shake Reduction in the menus). This filter actually reduces motion blur caused by camera shake and actually produces a much sharper photo from a shot that is normally unusable.

In use, it actually works okay and there are a number of sliders that allow you to increase or decrease the effect. There are limits to how much shake can be reduced in a photo but if you’ve ever had shots that have been ruined by slight camera shake, this may actually be able to save it. Again something that will interest photographers is that Photoshop CC also features an improved upscaling feature if you want to enlarge your photographs beyond its original size. It does seem to do a good job, although again, don’t expect it to add details back into an image where there was none to begin with.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

No more throwing away those camera shake or blurred images. Even when it seems that no matter how much you sharpen them (they just come out looking worse than before because you have no trace of what the real detailed image is). Well Photoshop CC has improved even further, adding their Camera Shake Reduction, which can fix your photo to how it was suppose to come out.

Adobe Photoshop Touch: how to use Photoshop for phone and tablets | Digital Camera World

Adobe Photoshop Touch: how to use Photoshop for phone and tablets | Digital Camera World | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

Tablets have huge potential for photographers. They are a great way of showing off your work to friends and prospective clients without having to carry a large portfolio case or computer, and there are some great apps that can make your life easier, by adding GPS tags to images, calculating hyperfocal distances, or even enabling a camera to be controlled remotely.

Adobe has produced some superb mobile apps such as Photoshop Express for making quick, simple changes to images captured by the on-board camera, and Adobe Nav, which turns your tablet into a tool box to save screen space when you’re working on your desktop computer.

Photoshop Touch goes quite a bit further than Photoshop Express, giving you a pretty comprehensive set of tools and features (including layers) to edit images.

It’s available for the iPad from the App Store, and for Android tablets via Google Play, and it costs £6.99 for tablets and £2.99 for phones.

Few are likely to switch to using Photoshop Touch instead of Photoshop CC, but it’s a great platform for thinking through ideas and experimenting with images. You can treat it like a photographer’s sketchpad.

However, if you want to edit images when you’re out and about, there’s an impressive collection of powerful tools that give some great results, and you can sync your images and projects with your Creative Cloud account to carry on working on your computer when you get home, or share the results on Facebook.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Combining the right mobile apps to use your Photoshop on your mobile, can help take the task away from the tools you don't neccesarily use. The Photoshop Touch is available at a low price, but filled to the brim with layers and features.

How to Create Tilt-Shift in Photoshop

How to Create Tilt-Shift in Photoshop | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

Here's a step-by-step tutorial on how to create tilt-shift miniature fakes with just a few effects in Photoshop.

Tilt-shift photography tends to work best for photos that have a wide view and are taken from higher ground. The photo doesn't necessarily have to be an aerial shot, but it should be something that is composed of many small parts that make up a whole. You should be able to envision how your photo might be manipulated to look like a miniature model, even before its Photoshop transformation.

Using the Gradient tool, draw a vertical, perpendicular line. This is a tricky step. You want to start the line in an area that you want to be in focus, and then end the line in an area that you want to be out of focus.

For best effects, your in-focus area should be something closer to you, rather than farther. In the photo below, we've outlined in red the line we drew. Note how it starts with the in-focus and closer white house and ends where the buildings are less distinct and out of focus.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Tilt-shift shots are mainly for an areial view. So the more landscape and buildings involved, the better. Say if I were to take a picture of downtown Portland, to emphasize shape, size and quanity this tutorial would be the one I would turn to for help.

The First Three Things to Learn in Lightroom | Beyond Megapixels

The First Three Things to Learn in Lightroom | Beyond Megapixels | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

The first three things to learn in Adobe Lightroom when getting started in photography.

It helps to know that nothing you do in Lightroom is permanent. Until you export the photo you can make as many changes and adjustments to it as you want, and you can always step backwards. Once you export the photo it becomes a separate file (typically JPEG), and the original RAW file is always available for further editing or to return back to its original state.

During post processing, you will usually make a series of adjustments. In the “Develop” module you can step back to undo just the last change you made by clicking on the “Previous” button. To return the photo to its original state simply click on the “Reset” button. This is a fantastic way to safely experiment with the various capabilities available in Lightroom – just start clicking around and playing with the various sliders and see how they change your photo. Export to keep the effects you like, and hit “Previous” or “Reset” to start over.

Budding photographers will tackle white balance and exposure correction as they practice their newfound skills. I wrote about tone and exposure settings in this recent article, so let’s talk about white balance.

We’ll often shoot in “Auto” white balance mode to make things easier on us, since we know we can always correct it in post-processing. Colors, shadows, saturation, brightness and tone can all be impacted by white balance. In Lighroom, the white balance menu has eight settings to choose from, plus a setting for custom white balance.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

There are always those first couple of baby steps we should take when it comes to Photoshop. And with Lightroom, the only difference is you'll be focusing on histograms and balancing out tones. The last step is the most crucial because learning how to crop a photo properly without loosing the main focus of the subject...can be a tough call.
