IA:I2: Introduction to Inkscape

IA:I2: Introduction to Inkscape | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

David Shaw's tutorials and walkthroughs for using Inkscape for game and comic art.

So you have got your hands on the latest copy of Inkscape (if not, go do so!) You are probably wanting to get started on making fabulous masterpieces of vector art. But you might be wondering if there's anything you need to know about this vector graphics tool before you start.

Well, actually I recommend playing around as one of the best ways to learn how to use Inkscape. That is how I've learnt nearly everything I know; from experimenting and trying new things out to see how things work out. To that end you might want to play around yourself for a bit, running through

Inkscape's own tutorials, trying to make your own art and figuring out some of the basics. Or if you have already done that you might want to continue on to Tutorial 1 to start with a practical example.

However, to give you a jump start on wrapping your head around the possibilities on Inkscape I will spend this first tutorial briefly going over the basic tools from my perspective as a budding artist. While I expect that most of you will want to jump straight into the more arty tutorials (once they're completed!), you might want to skim over this tutorial first to get an idea of what each of the tools can do.

Before we begin: note that I by no means know everything there is to know about Inkscape; I am still learning new tips and tricks as I go. There is also the issue that given my familiarity with the basics I might overlook some important details that are important for a beginner to know. As such this is to be treated as a "living document", where new material and corrections may be added without warning or ceremony.

Weye Feye connects your DSLR and smartphone

Weye Feye connects your DSLR and smartphone | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

"The Weye Feye from French accessory manufacturer XSories is a compact device that connects Nikon and Canon DSLRs without built-in Wi-Fi capabilities to a smartphone for remote controlling and image transfer.

To use the device you need to plug into the camera's USB port and install a dedicated app on your Android or iOS device. You can then control your camera from a distance of up to 80m. In Live View mode you can change settings such as ISO, white balance or aperture, switch between still and video modes, focus manually or with the AF and of course trigger an exposure.  In Gallery mode you can view, select and share images on your smartphone or tablet."

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Being able to control your camera from a distance, is now accessible while using your Android. Basically your phone will act as the LCD screen to the back of your camera. This small Weye Feye device is portable and can easily be strapped to a tripod. I feel that this would be best for videos or a photo shoot that has a wide range area.

Apple iOS 7, Color and How to Learn not to Over-Edit Images

Apple iOS 7, Color and How to Learn not to Over-Edit Images | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

This entire week have been nothing but about Apple. The new iPhone's 5C and 5S are entertaining the world. While the 5C is more afforable and 5S has more features...what have been changing the technological minds, is the iOS 7. And how this updated software has changed Apple's whole reputation.

Color depth, dramatization and vibrancy has to be what every photographer plans on attracting the eye of the beholder. Low light may be the one nusance we have in common, but with the help of photoshop and countless apps. One simple tool can add bold colors and just enough shadow to emphasize the right amount of depth. Even choosing Monokrom to turn those colors into striking black and white creations.

Everyone, amatuer or professional has had trouble with over-editing. Finding where to stop and where to add a bit of flare can make or break a photo. We even may want to stray from the traditional cliche of using the latest trends in every inch of pixel space. Using too much contrast and (there are a few of us that hate reading the instructions) not using the tutorials to properly learn the program. With editing, take the time to research and know the tools you are clicking on to change your image.

OnOne Software Announces Perfect Photo Suite 8, with Public Beta

OnOne Software Announces Perfect Photo Suite 8, with Public Beta | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

onOne Software has recently announced Perfect Photo Suite 8, a photo editing toolset that functions either as a standalone app, or as a plugin for Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Photoshop Elements, and Apple Aperture. The company has also unveiled a public beta, allowing you the chance to play with all the tools before the software goes live in November.

Perfect Enhance module – Perfect Enhance provides essential tools for basic enhancements. Use it to adjust brightness and contrast, remove a color cast, remove dust spots and power lines, and add sharpening and vignettes. It is an ideal module to start with when using Perfect Photo Suite 8 as a standalone application or when quick corrections are needed.

Perfect Batch Utility – Powerful batch processing of actions from one or multiple modules, including the insertion of a watermark.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

At the moment Perfect Photo Suite 8 can be tested out by the pubilc. While other photoshops are going to have to follow in line, because nowdays, not just anyone is going to purchase a photoshop without gaining a little bit of knowledge about, what they are using. Even better in my opinion is that it can stand alone as an app or a plug in for Adobe Lightroom.

Virtual Tour Software ~ Virtual Tour Company: Real Estate Photography Tips

Virtual Tour Software ~ Virtual Tour Company: Real Estate Photography Tips | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

"Taking professional looking real estate photography is important when creating a visually stunning 360 virtual tour. Lighting plays a major role to capture colors as well as to reveal form and texture within an image. Pay attention to the colors shown in your photos. Colors tend to set a certain mood for the person who is viewing them. Shooting photos at different times throughout the day will allow you to capture different tones, colors, and light effects. (Taking photographs during the early morning hours can capture great tones). The sun brings out blue hues in the morning hours and creates a crisp effect. Closer to noon or later, you will find softer colors and diffused light which will create a natural effect.

Test out different angles to play with the lighting that is being captured so that you reduce heavy shadows."

Kitty Fisher's insight:

This will be a big help to any new home shoppers out there, or if you're like me, moving around a lot seems to become your life. And in doing so, knowing that you could take a look around a home with a 360 virtual tour, without actually stepping a foot inside. But getting into Real Estate Photography can set the sights high, with angles, lighting, colors and involving objects that are already there. Being able to maneuver about, without dislocating the warm environment, can be the difference between you buying a home or selling one.

Digital Bolex Sample Footage Shows Off the Power of RAW Video in Low Light

Digital Bolex Sample Footage Shows Off the Power of RAW Video in Low Light | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

Althought we don't typically spend much time on high end video equipment, the most recent demo video shot with the D16 is a great example of just how much shadow and detail you can pull of RAW footage.

D16's 16mm sensor maxes out at ISO 400. It's not a camera meant for low light shooting at all, and yet you can see how well the footage turned out in spite of that. The video was shot a max ISO (of course) with a vintage 25mm lens and transcoded in ClipHouse. Every bit then had to be pushed heavily in post to bring out enough light, but even in the shadows, the noise is often noticeable if it's there at all.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Even when a camera like D16 isn't meant to capture low light video...so well. It's wonderful to know, now that RAW can be pushed far enough in post production to produce such a beautifully shot video. For us beginners in short films, that type of lighting gives us goosebumps. Because all in all, it's about the mood that presents itself on video than everything else that is going on.

Fun iPhone Photo-Editing App PicLab Gets Turbocharged With Universal PicLab HD App -- AppAdvice

Fun iPhone Photo-Editing App PicLab Gets Turbocharged With Universal PicLab HD App -- AppAdvice | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

PicLab, the fun photo-editing app for iPhone and iPod touch, is now natively available on iPad — but as a new, separate app called PicLab HD. PicLab HD is a “turbocharged” version of PicLab that’s optimized for iPad as well as iPhone and iPod touch. Just like the original PicLab, PicLab HD enables you to enhance photos using text, artwork, light leaks, textures, filters, and more.

Beautiful Typography – You’ll love our carefully selected collection of fonts from some of the most talented designers from around the world. Easily add multiple text layers, controlling their size, positioning, opacity, rotation, and color.

Another thing worth noting is that with the free PicLab app, your photo edits are saved with a “PicLab” watermark located at the bottom right corner. To remove this watermark, and to unlock the app’s collection of masks at the same time, you have to avail of one of PicLab’s two $0.99 in-app purchase offers. The other $0.99 in-app purchase unlocks all of PicLab’s supported fonts.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Usually when we come across an app that we like, in the back of our mind, we want this for our tablet as well. Thankfully PicLab has done just that, now from the iPad. Keeping that touch of indie handiwork, this simply and fun program has become a favorite of mine. And being able to add text, happens to add to the photo even more so.

With last week copyright was a big thing, being discussed. And for PicLab to not only save your edits but paste a watermark on the bottom right corner...makes things a little easier.

App simplifies photo editing | Arab News — Saudi Arabia News, Middle East News, Opinion, Economy and more.

App simplifies photo editing | Arab News — Saudi Arabia News, Middle East News, Opinion, Economy and more. | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

Exbel, designed by Yaser AIMajed, a Saudi-based app developed and photographer, is a double exposure application for iPhone that creates impressive images in just a few minutes.

Exbel app is the most suitable application for iPhone users seeking to intergrate images in a simple manner. The designing and programming of the application is convenient as it allows you to capture an image directly and combine it wth another image from your gallery profile.

Normally, double exposure photos require starting with darker, silhouetted images against a clear background, and then applying a second image via layering techniques. Exbel tries to solve this problem by making the process easier.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

The Exbel app can elminate the use of an extensive time-consuming layering on Photoshop. Within minutes, being able to combine two photos...this is big. I could easily make a photo a double image or a movement based form of digital art. It may not be the exact results that you would achieve in Photoshop but it will come incredibly close.

Watch: Jaw-Dropping Software Makes 3-D Models From Any Photo | Wired Design | Wired.com

Watch: Jaw-Dropping Software Makes 3-D Models From Any Photo | Wired Design | Wired.com | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

"Tao Chen hopes that 3-Sweep, an incredible piece of software he created with a team of researchers from Tel Aviv University, can do the same for 3-D objects. And as Chen explains, making the 3-D experts irrelevant was never the point. “Our biggest goal is still to help novice users to do this,” he explains. For the team, led by Daniel Cohen-Or, the biggest challenge wasn’t necessarily working out all the algorithmic magic behind the model-making, but rather giving lay users an easy way to harness it. “It took us some time to figure out how to make a very convenient user interface to generate this stuff,” Chen says.

The video demo is genuinely jaw-dropping stuff. It takes us through a series of photographs, showing how with just a few clicks of the mouse, 3-Sweep can turn the objects inside them into resizable, turnaroundable 3-D models. The first two clicks establish the object’s profile; the third traces its main axis, with the software snapping intelligently to the object along the way, like a more sophisticated version of Photoshop’s magic lasso. The background of the image is filled in with something like Photoshop’s content-aware fill, allowing the object to be turned and repositioned anywhere in its environment. Basic shapes like beer bottles and jars are easy to pull out of their static surroundings, but we see how more complex objects, like water taps and telescopes, can be similarly mapped with just a little more legwork."

Kitty Fisher's insight:

As 3-D keeps making it's way into our lives, the 3-Sweep could be the next move for photographers? Whether or not you feel that this video demo is a bit *cartoonish* but the general idea is that one day 3-D printers will make it easy to turn our digital images into physical ones. As the future becomes more accessible to us, turning a drawing from a 2-D project could be soon an object you can hold in your hand.

Google+ gets sophisticated array of photo editing tools

Google+ gets sophisticated array of photo editing tools | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

Google has built its Snapseed photo-editing technology into Google+, and it adds an impressively wide range of sophisticated, customizable, easy-to-use adjustments to the service.

The company has been steadily improving Google+ photo tools in recent months, for example with the "auto awesome" features for enhancing photos and automatically constructing animations out of sequences of similar photos. The new tools open up a wide range of fine-tuning possibilities for the sort of person who might use consumer photo-editing tools like iPhoto or Photoshop Elements. You can tweak Google's auto-enhance editing choices, edit the entire photo or selected parts of it, and apply a number of highly customizable filter effects.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

As a Chrome user and the fact that Google+ has been worked on for the last couple of months. It was come out as a general useful tool with my photographs. After the fine tuning and elegant approach of photo editing, Google+ feels and looks as if you have a high end program but without the loss of money and great results.

Over-Editing in Photoshop: How to Avoid 25 Common Editing Mistakes

Over-Editing in Photoshop: How to Avoid 25 Common Editing Mistakes | Photo Editing Software and Applications | Scoop.it

"When photographers 1st start using Photoshop, it is so fun and exciting and over-editing often occurs. Here are the top mistakes often made and how to avoid them.

As a result, many start out playing with filters and plug-ins and over-use them. Sometimes photographers feel Photoshop is all powerful and take images that should have been in a reject pile, and they try to “save” them. As a rule, Photoshop should not be used to save unacceptable photos. If a photo is out of focus, blown out, severely under-exposed, or has really awkward composition, Photoshop will not make it drastically better.  Used in excess, it can actually make the image worse.

Some things like selective color definitely can fall into fads or cliches, meaning they were over-used for a period of time. While selective color edits occasionally look great, more often than not, it is overdone.  The best example I can think of is when a photo is turned black and white and the eyes are colored back to blue."

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Over-editing can get the better of our photographs. Getting lost or fed-up with Photoshop has happened a handful of times to all of us. But reading through what the cliche, common mistakes took the pressure off of my mind and helped me to focus on what could bring the photo more to life.
